The Winner

 Four quarters make a pie classic,
Two hundred & six bones form a body majestic.
Many tiles to complete a jig saw puzzle,
Million drops to make an ocean bubble.

Spokes are many,
Lynch pins are few.
You are strong and feisty,
We couldn't do without you.

You are the bright polestar,
Without you, we couldn't conquer.
You are the shining pulsar,
You are the winner.

You Are A Winner

Losing Brand Equity

Consumer is the King. He buys what he wants. She buys only if she likes it. They buy whenever they want to.

There are a lot of companies out there in the market who are looking for selling their stuff. Usually, within the same product segment, multiple brands from myriad organizations are attempting to have their piece of pie.

Building a Brand
To get a larger piece of pie and to make an impression in the mind of the consumers, the products are building brands with advertisements. Brands with which people could identify easily and closely. Brands which could make a small place in their hearts and minds.

Usually such brand building exercise converts into increased sales and more profits. However, sometimes, such attempts convert into a loss of brand image.

Let me cite you some examples.

Consider the recent Cricket World Cup 2011, which was played in the Indian sub continent.

Usually, there is a break between the overs - where the advertisements are shown on TV. Such breaks span approximately 20 to 30 seconds, and can fit in an advertise or two.

However, with the urge of making more money, the television team and the marketeers slip in an ad immediately after a fall of wicket. What does that do to someone like me, who enjoys watching human emotions?

Well, I'm deprived of seeing the happiness of the bowler who took the wicket. I can't see the pride of his fellow players. I can't watch the disappointment written on the face of the player who got out. And the collective sighs and shouts of triumphs of the thousands of men and women inside the stadium.

These are the moments for which I'm watching the match. Yet, the silly advertisement that pops up immediately after the wicket prevents me from enjoying the euphoria.

Forced Selling
Net result, I hate (now that is a strong word) the brand for showcasing it's product at such a moment. I stop identifying with it. Couldn't it wait for a few moments more? And frankly, the brand doesn't gain any brownie points for this advertisement.

Do you feel like me?

Let's take another example.

After a day's work, you come home and open your laptop to surf your favorite websites. And as soon as you open the site, a flash advertisement comes up which prevent you from seeing the site.

In my opinion, such advertisements are desperate to gain attention. It will get attention only if it deserves it. But this forced attention seeking technique is not doing any good to the brand image .

There are some ads which fore scroll the screen and take upto 10 seconds get you back to where you wanted to be. These are the worst.

Brand Equity
If this was about online advertisements, you could have experienced something about paper advertisements too. How many times would you have had a pamphlet thrust into you hands selling some offer, only to realise that it is valid only with "Conditions Applied".

Well, a popular pizza brand in India is an expert in selling it's pizza with such conditions. And I have stopped taking it's pamphlets. If you need to sell, sell it without any complex conditions.

Just yesterday, I opened my Sunday newspaper only to see a half page advertisement sticking on the front page of the paper. To read the newspaper, I had to tear away the advertise from the paper. I was very careful, yet, I ended up tearing a part of the paper.

Guess what happened with the advertisement? It (and maybe the brand image) became a part of the trash.

There are several examples like these where an attempt to increase the brand equity backfires and translates into a loss of brand image.

I strongly hope that the marketing people are more intelligent and aware of such consumer needs. Only then can they create a sucessfull brand.

Rare Abundance

Everyone has It with abundance,
Yet for me It is rare.
I wonder about this imbalance,
It's absence is almost a nightmare.

Looking for It doesn't help,
Trying to get It is equally useless.
The heart lets out a short yelp,
And abhors the bleakness.

All I have is moist eyes,
A core with a weak crust.
A soul you could easily despise,
A mind no one would like to trust.

I am like a glass empty,
Not even a solitary drop.
I am dry and oh so bleary,
To my rescue came a teardrop.

It's so much within me,
Yet I look for It from beyond.
It's absence is eerie,
It came and feared, only to abscond.

Without It, my life seemed aimless,
Simple and bare.
I know why It is precious,
They give It to only to those they care.

Wish I could accept and give,
Wish someone could share and take.
With It our life could be festive,
It would set our soul awake.

The Real Beauty

Walking down the garden, a moment of silence had engulfed us. The sound of the rustling leaves and chirping birds was making itself evident. We were meeting after some three weeks. I sensed something was troubling her mind.

"Sweetheart, do you love me?" she asked nervously.

"Yes, I do. I love you from the bottom of my heart." I assured her.

"Why are you asking this question?" I asked further.

"Seeing all those beautiful and pretty girls, I wonder - whether you still love me. I do not even come to be as good as those stunning beauties."

"What is that within me that made you choose me over them?" she questioned.

"The answer is simple. You are a real beauty." I replied looking into her eyes. And she caught into my loving gaze.

Real Beauty
She knew that I was man who loved details. And she recognized this reply was going to be long.

"Do you remember the thought - Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder?" I asked.

"Yes, I do."

"Well, in my opinion, that thought is a passe. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder - and beyond. It lies in the thoughts and the feelings."

Her eyes lit up.

"It is not the visual beauty that only counts. There are several other things which make a lady a beauty. And believe me, you epitomise many of them."

She smiled.

"You are an intelligent lady. And when I refer to intelligence, I mean interpersonal intelligence. The way you talk to people, show care for them and give them the required attention stands out. I just love it when you give me an ear. You are attentive to my needs and my thoughts."

"Then you are so patient. Just the opposite of me. Yet, you are persuasive. I wonder how you manage to be patient yet persuasive."

She urged me to go on.

"You are compassionate and gentle. Haven't there been innumerable difficult moments in my life when you have shown me supreme compassion? It was that love which helped me tide over those challenges."

She nodded.

"Do you know that before I met you I was anything but an extrovert? Your enthusiasm, your joyfulness, your excitement has helped me discover this hidden side of me."

"You have taught me to be content with my life. You have taught me to be sincere and sensitive. You have shaped many aspects of my personality."

She said a soft yes.

Real Beauty
"Do you remember me from our initial days of courtship? You must have seen me having frequent bouts of anger. Yet, in these last few years - haven't I made a complete transition?"

"Yes, you have."

"Well, you are the reason behind it. You are the person who helped me to learn about forgiveness. You taught me to let go, to forgive and forget. You helped me in becoming gentle and tolerant. I am grateful for all of that."

"I have learned so many contrasting things with you. It was you who taught me to be cautious, yet bold, in taking decisions."

She was happy discovering how she had influenced me in many positive ways.

"I have learned to be humble in those moments of success. And strong in those moments of difficulties. You have given me wings."

"You have made me the man I am today. And I'm grateful to you for all of it. You have a beautiful heart. You have beautiful thoughts. You have passed on these important characteristics to me - so selflessly."

"You are not perfect. You are real. And this is what I like about you."

"You are a complete woman and you made me a complete man. That's why I call you a real beauty."

She was glowing with pride. I held her soft hands and gave her a warm embrace. She beamed with love. I was happy she was with me.

Compartments

We live our life in compartments.

You might be wondering what am I saying. The only compartments that you might have heard till now could possibly be the train compartments. But let us see if there is an element of truth in my earlier statement.

To start with, what is a compartment?

Going by the dictionary, a compartment is a space into which an area is subdivided. It is a partitioned section, chamber, or separate room within a larger enclosed area.
Compartments
If our life is this area, the small spaces or sections that we create in our lives, either intentionally or unintentionally, are the compartments.

Let's consider some of the qualities we have - like being an introvert or an extrovert. An extrovert is a sociable and an outgoing person. On the other hand, an introvert is someone who doesn't like frequent social contacts.

To consider my example itself, in some spheres of my life, I'm an introvert. I keep to myself. I turn my thoughts inwards. In some other facets of my life, I'm an extrovert. I'm outgoing and social in such cases.

Introvert Or Extrovert
These two ideas are contradictory in themselves. Yet they exist together, within me. It is because I live my lives in compartments.

And there is a matter of perception. While the world might perceive you to be an introvert, you might be an extrovert. After all, you might be wearing a mask.

Here are some words from the star actor - Gerard Butler.

==
I know I have within myself… a side of solitude. I think people who know me can see, but people who just meet me can’t because I’m generally very fun and gregarious. But I love to spend a lot of time on my own. I can seriously go into my own head and often love to let myself travel where I don’t know where I’m going.
==

Moving onto some other qualities. Let us consider "confidence". Since childhood, teachers and parents would have told you - "Be confident. Do not be over-confident."

For a moment, think about the last thing where you showcased confidence. In these moments, the self belief would have helped you with your task.

Now think about the last time when you were horribly unconfident. You must have found yourself a nervous wreck in such situations.

Unconfident Confidence
And in such trying circumstances, a thought runs through my your mind - why am I confident in some situation while lacking the confidence in other cases? I have found myself in such a quandary many a times.

Well, in some cases, it has to do with the situation at hand. A situation which you have experienced many a times doesnt give you the jitters. Yet a new situation, does send shivers down your spine.

However, you could have seen experienced situations many a times, yet you feel unconfident. While in others, you posses amazing self confidence. What is the reason for such a behavior? The answer is compartments.

Let us take an recent example - that of Barack Obama - in the context of killing of Osama Bin Laden. Osama was killed on the night of 2nd to 3rd May 2011, at the orders of the President of the USA - Barack Obama.

Obama had several discussions on this matter in the last one month with his top team. He reviewed the plan and signed the order to take out Osama.

He had to take a decision on the plan to be chosen to kill Osama. He slept over the options for a night and gave his decision the next morning.

Now, this was not the only thing which Obama did for the last one month. He executed his other tasks with equal zest. He talked with his wife everyday and every night. He played with his children daily.

Barack Obama Compartmentalization
Yet, he didn't tell them about the impending operation. He went about with a sober face in all his public meetings, never giving away a clue of the most audacious operation being planned.

Simply speaking, he compartmentalized his life. Read more here.

Let's consider about something more personal.

Did someone give you a feedback that your behavior is quite childish, or immature? And did someone else tell you that you exhibit qualities making you look more mature than your age?

And did some one tell you that you were selfish, while someone else praised you for being so selfless?
Selfish Or Selfless
Well, someone I know closely recently confided in me that it does happen regularly to him. He was surprised. He wondered what was his real self. I didn't even bat an eyelid.

As a child, you might have heard about the story of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. The book discussed about a concept of split personality through the eyes of a man who showcased two distinct personalities. This was an extreme case of compartmentalization of life.

Dr Jekyl Mr Hyde Split Personality
Then you have the eternal qualities - of love and hate. Often we find ourselves loving someone, and hating someone else. Or sometimes, loving a person in one situation while detesting or hating that person in other situations.

And you will also have certain spheres of your life about which you are happy. While in other facets, you are not that happy, or even sad. All of this has to living our lives in compartments.

There will be several such instances where we live our life in compartments. In a few cases, it is quite evident and we notice it easily. In other cases, it is not so evident and just escapes our eye.

I personally think that there is nothing wrong in living our lives in compartments. Yet, we should be aware of such things - our inner self. And should let one compartment help the other.

P.S. This topic has been buzzing in my mind for the last six months. Thankfully, I was able to put those randoms thoughts into a cohesive post today.

French Open 2011

It is the time of the year when the ladies and gentlemen with nimble feet on clay become the God's of clay. It is the time for the French Open 2011.

It is summer time in Europe and across all of the northern hemisphere. And in this hot summer, in the beautiful city of Paris, the professional tennis players will fight it out to win the French Open 2011. This is the second Grand Slam of the year.

French Open 2011
When and where is the French Open 2011?

It is supposed to commence the coming Monday, on 24th May 2011. It will be played over the course of two weeks between 24th May to 5th June. In sync with the name, it will be played in France. It will be played in Paris, on the hallowed turf of Rolland Garros.

Rolland Garros Paris, The French Open
A total of 128 men and women each will be fighting it out on the clay courts of Rolland Garros to win the Championships. The men and women's draw will have 4 quarters each, having 32 players each, battling it out for the supremacy and entry into week 2 of the Championships.

How does the men's draw look this year?

The favorite of the last few years - Rafael Nadal - is the top seed. He will start the Open on Monday.

Rafael Nadal At The French Open
In his Quarter, you have the Russian stalwart - Nikolay Davydenko - who is seeded 28th. They can meet as early as the 3rd round and Davydenko has the capability to knocking out Nadal.

In the other half of his Quarter, Robin Soderling - seeded 5th - will be attempting to move into the second week of the Open. Then you also have Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus, who is seeded 28th, in the same section. All these players have the capability to derail Nadal's dream of winning yet another French Open.

Robin Soderling At The French Open
Andy Murray is seeded 4th. He should have an unhindered run in his part of the Quarter into the second week.

The third Quarter has more champions. Roger Federer will be playing in this section and is seeded third. He would look to conquer his fears of playing on clay and try to win the Open. David Ferrer of Spain is seeded 7th and can give Federer a run for his money.

Roger Federer At The French Open
It is disappointing to see a very few Spanish players in the top seedings at the French open. For long, the Spaniards were considered as masters of clay. Today, only a few players are upto the mark.

In the last Quarter, you have the second seed Novak Djokvic of Serbia. Going by his good form, he can give Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal a tough run.

Novak Djokovic At The French Open
However, going by the form book, Nadal looks all set to with the French Open again. Frederer and Djokovic are the men who can give him a tough challenge.

Moving onto the Women's Draw.

The women's draw is equally tough. My eternal favorite - Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark - is seeded first. However, in her Quarter, you have Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia seeded 28th, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia seeded 13th and Samantha Stosur of Australia seeded 8th. Svetlana can be a giant killer although she is seeded 13th.

Caroline Wozniacki
In the second Quarter, Vera Zvonareva of Russia (seeded 3rd), Jelena Jankovic of Serbia (seeded 10th) and Francesca Schiavone and Italy (seeded 5th) will be battling it out. Vera seems all set to win this Quarter. Yet on any of the day, Jelena or Francesca can give her a run for her money.

The third Quarter looks to be devoid of stalwarts. This gives the former World Number One - Ana Ivanovic from Serbia - a chance to prove her mettle. If she plays her game nicely, she can move into the quarters. Who wouldn't love a stylish player in the second week?

Ana Ivanovic At The French Open
In the last quarter, you have two former champions. Kim Clijsters of Belgium is seeded second. A full time mother and a champion at the previous two U.S. Opens, she is likely to gather steam as the Championship progresses.

Importantly, you have the Russian devushka in her quarter, Maria Sharapova, seeded 7th. Just a week back, she won the Italian Open. Like Ana, she is also on the comeback trail and has the potential to win the championships.

Maria Sharapova At The French Open
All in all, the women's draw promises to be exciting. The William's sisters are absent. While Clijsters can give Caroline Wozniacki a run for her money, Caroline has the potential to win the French Open 2011. She just has to do one thing - play with a big heart in the biggest of the matches.

Apart from tennis, the ladies have the capabilities to set the pulse racing with their elegant dressing. And these girls can become showstoppers - both on the court and off the court. As an example, Maria Sharapova can give a run to the actresses and divas on the red carpet at Cannes.

Maria Sharapova Style Icon
Uma Thurman
Coming back to tennis, the next two week promise to be very exciting. The surface of clay is always known to be slow. The ball spins a lot. The heat saps your energy.

All of this make the game more exciting. The players with the best talent and the strongest perseverance will make it to the finals and be crowned as the Champions.

A Breath Of Freshness

Like a moon half,
She shone through the night dark.
Let out a cute laugh,
Ignited a wild spark.

Magnificent grace,
With a hint of charm.
Superb style she did encase,
Along with a confident calm.

Decked in a necklace colorful,
With two crowning shy eyes.
A dress that was artful,
She scintillated like the fireflies.

Her eyes twinkled,
With a smile dimpled.
I was almost lost,
In her sweetness glossed.

Discovered a starlet cracker,
Admired her illuminating brightness.
All that I could do was covet her,
She was a breath of freshness.

Cooling Ideas

It's summer time. The temperature is hovering in the late 30s and early 40s. One of the most important things in summer is to keep yourself and your mind cool.

Summer Time
Well, the traditional ideas are in play. Some people are using the Air-conditioner. Others are using the water coolers. The rest, including me, have the ceiling fan for help. And when there is a power shutdown - the newspaper comes in handy.

Off late, I noticed something interesting.

A simple exhaust fan (the one's that you use in the kitchen), throwing the air out of a closed room - makes the room a cool place. Interestingly, it stays cool for quite some time, even after the fan has been switched off.

Now if it really cools, would it be useful as a cooler? Well, to check that it will worthwhile to check the energy consumption of these items. This site was helpful for this purpose.

Monthly Electricity Consumption
As we can see, the energy consumption of a domestic exhaust fan is comparable to a small air cooler, and much lesser than an air conditioner. Importantly, you don't have to refill it with water. Another advantage is that it's easy to fit into a room.

As for the disadvantage, it does make a lot of noise. But then you can have some technique to make it a bit silence.

Have you noticed this phenomenon? And considering all these points, can this simple exhaust fan serve as an slightly less expensive and simple cooling idea?

यादों मैं तेरी मेरी शाम थी कटी
ख्वाबों मैं तेरी मेरी रात थी कटी
क्या चीज थी तू जानेमन
तेरी राहों मैं मेरी जिंदगी कटी

Falling In Love

Walking down the dark woods, Jack and Jill shared a pregnant pause.

Jack And Jill
That's when Jack asked Jill, "Hey, Why do you think we have never fallen in Love?"

Jill answered, innocently, "That's because we are too afraid to fall."

On her fumbling steps, she added, "Like I'm afraid right now. Only If I had the assurance that you would pick me if I ever fell..."

She left the sentence incomplete.

Jack pondered over her sketchy answer. Jill didn't know how she had come up with the reply.

And both of them kept on walking, sharing the hushed silence.

AnonymouS Girl

On a weekend night,
Relaxed and lazy.
Our paths crossed without any foresight,
How so unintentionally.

Within a little time,
We had to go in directions opposite.
With interest sparked in the meanwhile,
How could we part and not again meet.

And we did connect,
Again and again.
Some short and long meets perfect,
Now and Then.

When meetings were interrupted,
Intentions weren't ever doubted.
And when encounters were rare,
It was never a nightmare.

Shared thoughts many,
Discussed ideas innumerable.
Exchanged views and opinions amply,
Experienced many a chortle and chuckle.

Who was the lady,
What was special about her?
Why did she have an aura starry,
And a persona dazzler?

She was intriguing,
And interesting and flawless.
She was a lady bubbling,
A girl AnonymouS.

Stabbed

A heart brittle,
A mind frail.
A soul fragile,
A psyche pale.

A body feverish,
A mind fallible.
A soul fiendish,
A psyche miserable.

Lost in thoughts,
Alone in a world with blots.
Crowned with imperfections chronic,
And other habits bad and demonic.

Wondered what could cure,
Anything that would help.
Nothing could be a savior,
All it would do was yelp.

Assessed the worth,
Of his heart dark and crabbed.
Full of turmoil and nothing to unearth,
It was just stabbed.

In Turmoil

Asking

I overheard this conversation recently.

~~~
"I'm scared of asking."
"Really? Haven't you heard about that quote from The Bible - 'Ask, and it shall be given you; seek; and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [Matthew 7:7-8]' "
"Well, I have heard about it. Yet there are a few things which make me apprehensive about asking".
"And what is that? Why is that??"
"Well, when you ask a question, you want an answer to something. Or you want something - for yourself or someone else. If you are just seeking some info, it's OK. But sometimes the info that you get in response to the question leaves you burdened. It results in disappointment!!"
"Is this so bad?"
"It can get worse. If you ask a question which would yield a yes or a no, an unfavorable response leaves you dejected."
"Yes, that's bad. I agree."
"If the answer is not favorable, and that happens again and again, it makes you feel that you are sinking. Makes you wonder whether it was worth asking the question. Makes you look like a fool."
~~~

I looked around to see who was discussing such a poignant matter. Surprisingly, no one was around. I looked sideways.  Once again no one.

It was then it dawned upon me. I understood who was speaking aloud.

It was my mind!!

Supported by a frowning face and drooping shoulders, I had just returned to be my normal self when I heard someone whisper, "Never Say, Never Again". This time I knew the voice.

It was my heart!!!

Operation Geronimo Learnings

It has been less than 10 days since the American forces carried out an audacious operation in the heartland of Pakistan to kill the most wanted terrorist in the world - Osama Bin Laden.

Executed under the code name Operation Geronimo, this military campaign will go down in history as one of the most sucessfull anti-terror operations.

Under this context, it would be worthwhile to absorb and assimilate the learning's of this complex endeavour. Significantly, these learning's can be applied in different situations and facets.

Let us start with an overview of the operation itself.
  • Three to four helicopters fly from Afghanistan into Abbottabad, Pakistan, with American Navy Seals on board.
  • They descend on Osama Bin Laden's compound in the dead of the night and engage in a massive fire fight.
    • Osama Bin Laden is shot dead. He is identified and his body is flown out of Pakistan. The operation is completed in approximately 40 minutes.
    • The operation is controlled from The White House, America.
    The importance from the operation can be gauged from the fact that America has spent close to a decade in pursing Osama Bin Laden. They spent close to a trillion dollars, just to get this one man.
      So what are the learning's from the operation?

      Persistence Is The Key.

      You might have heard about the quote - Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” - by Bill Bradley.

      The Americans relentlessly pursued Bin Laden and it was the persistence of the efforts which finally got them to their man. Of course, they had to throw in a lot of money. Yet, the will was never lacking.

      Mitigate Risks With Confidence.

      Think about the way the operation is executed. The Americans did not know with certainty that Osama was in that compound in Abbottabad.

      The armed forces were to conduct an operation in a foreign land, without the permission of the country. The odds of executing this successfully without any collateral damage were high.

      Osama Bin Laden Abbottabad Compound
      Under such circumstances, they beleived in this quote by the American car maganate - Henry Ford.

      No one can really guarantee the future. The best thing we can do is calculate the risks involved, size up our chances, estimate our ability to deal with them, and then make our plans with confidence.

      The Americans did just that. And they were successfull.

      Preparation and Practice Are Equally Important.

      Well, after tracking down Bin Laden to that compound in the garrison town of Abbottabad, just a few miles away from Pakistan's military academy, the Americans prepared a lot for the operation. They gathered huge amount of intelligence. They did the ground work. All of this formed the basis of the  sucessfull operation.

      In an very important comment, John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counter terrorism, said that the operation was well practiced at undisclosed locations. This practice made sure that the forces were well aware of the compound, its surrounding etc. It ensured that they do not comes across a massive unforeseen situation which would derail the operation itself.

      Share Information Only On A Need-to-know Basis.

      The Americans violated the sovereignty of Pakistan as a nation by carrying out an independent operation on Pakistani soil. As per current information, no one from the Pakistani Government knew about this attack before hand. Why?

      Barack Obama During Osama Operation - Code Named Operation Geronimo
      Well, here are Barack Obama's words.

      "If I'm not revealing to some of my closest aides what we're doing, then I sure as heck am not going to be revealing it to folks who I don't know," he said. "I didn't tell my own family."

      Well, this says it all. Only those people who mattered were informed. This ensured that the operation was not compromised.

      Never Underestimate.

      Never ever underestimate the risks in any endeavour. This will ensure that adequate back up plans are available for any kind of situation.

      This did happen in Operation Geronimo when one of the copters crashed. The Americans are supposed to have switched onto the backup plan to execute it successfully.

      Obama himself talked about it. He wondered, "If Murphy's Law applies and something happens, Can we still get our guys out?"

      Set Clear And Precise Goals

      The aims and goals of the operation was set forth clearly to the men on ground.

      They were
      • If it's Osama who is in there, try to capture him alive only if he is naked. Else, take him off.
      • If it's Osama who isn't there, just get the hell out of there.
      Well, these clear goals ensured that the men on ground did not have to think hard on what to do when they came across Osama. The rules were set forth and they were to be executed.

      Well, there will be people who will support creativity in activities. Well, creativity is important - but it is to be done in the planning phase. The execution phase has to go on with mechanical precision. Nothing more, nothing less.

      Engage People In Positions Of Authority And Responsibility.

      A key highlight of this operation was the fact that this operation was controlled and monitored from The White House and the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. President Barack Obama and his closest aides watched the operation real time from the Situation (Control) Room in the White House.

      This ensured two things.

      The people who had the responsibility to execute were involved. As stakeholders, it was their job to ensure that the operation is taken to a logical conclusion.This could either mean ensuring that Osama is taken out or the American forces are flown out of the country, safely.

      Importantly, the people who had the powers to take the decision were involved. They could take decisions which could make the operation a success. They could take decisions in the event of any unforeseen situation. And decisions are most important in such massive operations.

      Luck Is The Key.

      The biggest of the endeavors needs the greatest of the luck. No one has spoken  about it outright. Yet, I consider that luck was an important factor in this operation.

      Just think how three to four helicopters fly into a country, go in undetected into a garrison town just 60 kms from the capital, and then fly out with the most wanted terrorist in the world - dead.

      Well, there might be several other lessons which can be grasped from this complex military operations. The one's highlighted here are not new themselves.

      Yet, incoporating them in any endeavor is important. All of them can be a strong tail wind in ensuring the success of a mission.

      Ups And Downs

      A small quote on the Ups and Downs - which we all come across in different facets of life.

      We all have our ups and downs. It is important to be strong when down and modest when up.

      Ups and Downs

      P.S. Plagiarism is the buzz word these days. And I hope that these lines of mine are original.

      P.S.2. Received a small appreciation. These lines were commented to be wise thoughts :-)

      When Her Eyes Met Mine

      The possibility of my crossing roads with her today were bleak. A quick mathematical calculation in the mind made the odds look very high. Almost impossible.

      A thought darted through my mind. There is always a ray of hope.

      I often love to have my cup of coffee slowly and solemnly. There is nothing better than sipping a cup of pipping hot coffee - having those wandering thoughts for company.

      Luck however seemed to be on my side. And I gulped the cup of lukewarm coffee with amazing speed. I wonder how? I wonder why??

      She was a brisk walker. And my nimbleness wouldn't do the trick. I almost broke into a quick jog. Fast enough with long steps, yet slow enough so as not to attract attention.

      A small job was to be done on the way. And I did it with amazing alacrity.  Within a moment she was in my sight. Like an elusive pimpernel, she disappeared quickly. I almost broke into a sprint.

      Circumstances bring in interesting situations. And in one such God created circumstance, our eyes met.

      And as I thanked God, she gave me her million dollar smile.

      When Her Eyes Met Mine

      And before I knew, in a matter of twenty seconds, in what seemed ages, she did her disappearing act. Until then.

      ~~~~
      When her eyes met mine,
      Sweet and sublime.
      She broke into a smile,
      Cute and beguile.
      In a moment she disappeared,
      Leaving me in a void.
      Yet in my thoughts she appeared,
      Leaving me buoyed.
      With You Without You
      Happiness knows no bounds,
      With You
      Disappointment is profound,
      Without You
      Desires are thrilling,
      With You
      The loneliness is killing,
      Without You
      Boredom makes a no show,
      With You
      Indifference grows,
      Without You
      Fear is unknown,
      With You
      A tinge of sorrow sets in,
      Without you
      Love is in the air,
      With You
      Hope is infinite,
      With You
      Nothing else awes me,
      With You
      I brim with ecstasy,
      With You
      Life is special,
      With You
      Exceptional and classical,
      With You
      I just have two questions,
      My Dear
      Who Are You?
      Where Are You?
      P.S. This is for my friend AS.
      Intentional Foul
      You might have heard that football players are the best actors.
      They act as if they are tripped by a player from the opposite team, just to have him get a card - sometimes a yellow card, which is just a warning. Sometimes a red card is handed out, resulting in the opposition player being sent off. With one player being sent off, the chances of losing are high.
      Many a times, such acts of deceit are done in the penalty box. In such a case, a penalty is awarded and in most of these cases, a goal is scored. Usually, such a penalty makes a difference between losing and winning the game.
      Over the years, players have become experts in such acts. They cheat with amazing accuracy, so that the referee does not punish them.
      You must also remember Zinedine Zidane being sent off for his head butt.
      This incident, however, was extreme.
      In a game on Monday 2nd May 2011, between Cardiff and Middlesbrough, a player knocked off - hold your breaths - a referee. Surprisingly, the referee on the side lines was a lady.
      The player was Kevin McNaughton. The lady went by the name Sian Massey. It is clear from the video that the act was done intentionally. Worse still, he did not bother to ask the lady how she was after she got up.
      Girls complain that chivalry is dead. Forget chivalry, here even basic etiquette's are not honored.
      The lady was a proud professional. She got up and without blinking an eye went about her job. It was indeed a case of a job being well done.
      As for the poor fellow, it was a bad mark on his career. And if he has a girlfriend or a wife, she would definitely be ashamed of this act.
